DeVonnia Bonimy-Lee, PT, DPT, WCS, CLT-LANA, RYT
Dr. Bonimy-Lee, the owner of Viva Physio & Wellness, is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and the Bahamas Association of Physiotherapists (BAPT). Her interest in the way the body moves started with gymnastics classes in 6th grade. She was fascinated by the complex execution, the visible grace and strength delivered through repetition and dedication.
In 2007 DeVonnia received the Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Seton Hall University and as the Graduate Assistant, studied under Dr. Doreen Stiskal, Dr. Genevieve Zipp, Dr. Marc Campolo, Dr. Jim Phillips with the overall guidance of the School of Graduate Medical Education to "Learn the Art and Science of Caring".
Dr. Bonimy-Lee is 1 of 381 therapists certified as a Women's Health Specialist (WCS) in North America and is the only WCS in the Caribbean. Following matriculation, she worked at the premier hospitals for Cancer, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Rehabilitation, NYU Langone Medical Center / RUSK Institute in New York City as a licensed Physical Therapist, during which time she developed a genuine compassion for patients living with the long term effects of cancer treatment. She specialized in Pelvic and Abdominal health while working in the Oncology and Pelvic health setting and sat for the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS-WCS) Certification in 2015.
Pursuing a passion for cancer rehabilitation, DeVonnia obtained the Lymphedema management certification through the Norton School of Lymphatics, including treatment of Head and Neck Cancer. Dr. Bonimy-Lee is a member of the APTA Section/Academy of Women's Health as well as a Certified Lymphedema Therapist; recognized by the Lymphology Association of North America (LANA). In this field, she had the honour of presenting her case study at the National Lymphology Conference in 2014. Dr. Bonimy-Lee continues to develop her knowledge and breadth of skills, staying current with research specific to patient care, and assisting in advancing the profession in the Bahamas through organizing Continuing Education programming.
Over the years, Dr. Bonimy-Lee has worked in the U.S., Australia and The Bahamas, most recently as the Rehabilitation Coordinator at Doctors Hospital in Nassau, Bahamas and enjoys translating her knowledge about pelvic health and lymphedema to patients from all backgrounds. In 2010, DeVonnia became a certified Hatha Yoga Instructor, a practice that she translates into a holistic vision of Physical Therapy & Wellness, including diet, lifestyle, activity and mindfulness. By learning to incorporate different aspects of this tradition into a patient's daily routine, simple milestones can be achieved and a path to wellness can be constructed.
During her spare time, she practices Muay Thai kickboxing, yoga, plays tennis, bikes and plays on the beach with her 3 year-old daughter, Viva and husband, David and has welcomed a new member of her family this year.
Viva Physio & Wellness opened in May 2017.
